Kerala Travel-Tourist Guide is a modest endeavor to make travel in Kerala a fabulously rich experience for tourists all over the world. Kerala with its serene sky, maidenly shyness, calm atmosphere, and incredibly rich greenery is often addressed as God’s Own Country. This beautiful slim lady located at the southern part of India boasts stunning sceneries, virgin foliage, lovely beaches and backwaters with ancient piers.

The gratifying travel experience in Kerala is sure to create a rejuvenating synergy of mind and body. Kerala Travel-Tourist Guide assists in mapping your tour according to your inclination. No two people are the same. In this blog I have sketched the places to visit, listing each district and the cultural history of those places .In order to make travel to my lovely birthplace a life long memory, do go through the travel tips and the beautiful videos.

History of Kerala as a state dates back to November 1st 1959, when Kerala was formally declared as an independent state. According to myth gods gave Parashurama, a monk, a blessing that he can toss his axe into the ocean, and the distance the axe covers up, the land belongs to him. Thus according to this myth Kerala is created by Parashurama. Rich history reveals that Kerala is a cornucopia of culture, art and history and Kerala Travel-Tourist Guide is glad to unlock this cornucopia for you.

Citizens of Kerala, Keralites or Malayalees are cultured and educated. Kerala boasts a literacy rate of 100%. Ladies wearing saree, with jasmine clad long hair and men wearing dhotis are a common view in Kerala. Modern ladies choose salwars or jeans and men go for jeans/pants and shirt. Mother tongue of Keralites is Malayalam but educated Malayalees speak English. World famous Keralites are Rasool Pookkutty, the Oscar Award winner, Parvathy Omanakuttan, Miss World first runner up 2009 and Arundathy Roy, Booker prize winner and author of God of Small Things.

Geography of Kerala is the most impressive part that attracts travelers. Lined by ocean on east and Western Ghats on the west, Kerala’s fabulously rich geography displays a feisty side of travel. The lush greenery and abundant backwaters add to the spirited geography of Kerala.

In Kerala one can savor the peaceful atmosphere and the yummy spicy keralite food. Kerala fish curry is a major cuisine in most of the famous Indian restaurants all over the world. Every day food of Kerala is rice and fish curry. Tapioca and fish is another favorite. Breakfast is usually edli, dosa, puttu or appam. Appam, a favorite of most travelers is a soft white breakfast, similar to pancake in appearance. The official drink of Kerala is tender coconut water, sweet and full of energy. Sambharam(Butter milk) is also a relief in the hot summer.

Kerala travel tip 1
Opt light cotton clothes when you travel to Kerala. You can also buy cotton clothes after reaching Kerala as you can find fabulous and stylish cotton shirts,tops,pants and skirts. If you are coming via. Cochin airport,trivandrum airport or kozhikode airport you can buy cotton clothes from fabindia, which is an exclusive shop for ethnic indian clothes. You can also opt other textile shops but they dont provide ethnic clothes.

Since the climate is hot it is advisable to wear hat and sunglass. Prefer wearing sandals or hawai slippers. Keep a handfan handy. Please be careful when you select sun screen cream or lotion, as the SPF required for indian climate may not be the same as the one you use in your country. If you can consult your skin doctor in that matter it will be perfect.

Kerala travel tip 2
Please dont drink water that is not bottled. Prefer buying bottled water from good shops. Since it is hot,it is advisable to have tender coconut water from local shops or stalls put up by coconut development board. Tender coconut water is tastey and energetic and it prevents dehydration. Butter milk is also advisable as it quenches thirst and helps prevent stomach problems. Indian food is tastey but some dishes are hot and spicey. So before you order consult the waiter or the room service boy.

Kerala travel tip 3
For long distance travel inside Kerala opt for train. For eg. If you want to travel from Alappuzha to Kozhikode train is the best option. For less distances you can opt Kerala state road transport corporation buses or private buses. If you prefer to travel in a taxi car from airport,you can get taxi coupons from kiosks inside airport. Auto,a three wheeled vehicle is the common taxi in Kerala. But while travelling in an auto make sure the meter is running. If not ask a localite how much is the normal charge to the place you want to travel. That will help you from auto driver ripping your pocket.

They provide full body oil massages that are not more than thousand indian rupees

If you mingle with keralites be sure about their culture. Keralites are friendly and helpful,they love it when you respect their culture and heritage. So be sure to remove your shoes, before you enter a Keralite house. Keralites formally greet saying namaskaram and less formal ones may just smile and welcome you. Keralites dont usually kiss to greet.

Coconut used fringed sandy coastlines, a spectacular rock called Jadayu rock, an elegant palace on the long sandy beaches, beautiful silver waterfalls all attract tourists to Kollam. Vallikavu, the main ashram of mother Amritanandamayi is situated in this district. Tourist reason is August to March. Trivandrum international airport is 71kms away from Kollam. Kollam railway junction is the nearest railway station. Kerala state road transport corporation buses and private vehicles make travelling via road comfortable.

Pathanamthitta

Pathanamthitta, the land of lord Ayyappa attracts pilgrims from all over India. Kottayam

In the east of Wayanad district kids Nilgiri and Tamilnadu, north lies Karnataka, in the south Malappuram and in the west lies Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Tourist reason in Wayanad is August to May. By air you can reach Wayanad via Karipur airport,situated about 105km away from Kalpetta. From there you can travel by taxi or Kerala road transport corporation buses. Travelling via road to Wayanad is fun as the hair pin turns and the deep forests evokes every soul. Kalpetta,the capital of Wayanad is 72kms away from Kozhikode. 6kms away from Kalpetta is Puliyar mountain in which Ananthanatha swami jain temple.

Edakkal caves

Situated at 12kms from sultan bathery and 3kms from Ambalavayal is Ambukuthi mountain. Walls of this cave are engraved with pictures by ancient people.

Mirror temple

20kms away from Kalpetta, on the valley of Vellari mountain is situated this famous jain temple. The mirrors in this temple are awesome.

Mananthavadi Pazhashi memoir

Pazhashi raja,the king,spent his last days in this place. Pazhashi raja's tomb and a park in his name is located at this place.

Pakshi Pathalam

A famous bird sanctuary,this place is located at Brahmagiri mountain's valley, which is located at 10km away from Thirunelli. The only option to reach here is by walk.

Thirunelli

Known as dakshinakashi( kashi of south) thirunelli is located at 32kms away from Mananthavadi. A vishnu temple is located in the valley of brahmagiri. Papanashini river flows near this temple

Kuruva island

45kms away from Sultan bathery and 17kms away from Mananthavadi, this island is surrounded by Kabani river. In addition to wildlife, rare flowers and orchids are found here.

Brahmagiri

11kms from Thirunelli and 29kms from Mananthavadi, this is a perfect place for tourist interested in trekking.

Sulthan Bathery

Tipu sulthan's fort is situated here. Wild life warden's office is situated here.

Panamaram

Situated at 29kms from sulthan bathery, Panamaram is the place where Pazhashi raja's fort is built.

Kannur

Kannur, with its heavenly beaches,is an ideal get away for tourists who come to Kerala. Mayyazhi lake, the famous heroine of many malayalam novels, flows through Kannur. Boundaries being, Sahya mountains on the east, arabian sea on the west, Kasargode on north and Kozhikode and Wayanad districts on the south. Tourist season of August to March attracts lot of tourists to Kannur. Kannur is the biggest cashew producer of Kerala,so make sure to buy cashewnuts from here. Dharmadam island

Located at a coastal strip,55km away from Kannur, Ezhimala is a hill blessed for its natural beauty. Rare medicinal plants and the coastal sand makes this a rare place on earth. The biggest naval academy in Asia is located here.

Payyambalam beach

Peaceful and beautiful,this wonderful beach is 2km away from Kannur fort.

Parashinikkadavu shri muthappa temple

This famous temple is located at the river banks of Valappattanam river,which is located 18kms away from Kannur. This is the only temple in Kerala where Theyyam is performed daily and this makes it a special place to visit. The offerings for the deity here is toddy and dried fish. Boating facilities are provided near the temple

Parashinikkadavu snake sanctuary

Different species of snakes are protected here in a climate suitable for them. Here studies are conducted on the treatment of snake poisoning.

Thalaserry fort

Located at 20km away from Kannur,this fort was built by british.

Muzhippilangad beach

Tourists have named this place as swimmer's heaven. This beach,the only drive in beach in Kerala,is just 4kms long.15kms away from Kannur and 8kms away from Thalaserry this beach is a beach lover's dream

Meenkunnu beach

Golden sand and silver waves makes this beach a traveller's haven. It is located at 12kms away from Kannur

Pazhashi dam

37kms away from Kannur,this dam is located at Mattannur. Tourists can enjoy the boating in the reservoir and accommodation in dormitory.

Kottiyur temple

The famous temple of Kottiyur is located about 60kms away from Kannur

Kasargode, the land of ancient forts, is a silent, alluring place to visit. Bordered by sahya mountains in the east, Arabian sea in the west, Karnataka state in the north and Kannur district in the south, Kasargode is a plethora for all travellers. During the reason of August to March Kasargode allures lot of tourists. Even though industrially backward, the state boasts fertile lands,and thus the biggest producer of aracanut and tobacco in Kerala. Easiest method to reach Kasargode is via Mangalore airport,which is only 50km away. Karipur airport, Kozhikode is 200km away. If travelling by rail,you can get down at Kasargode railway station. Travelling via road is also fine as there are ample roads connecting Karnataka and Kerala

Places to visit

Bakel fort

Situated at 14km away from Kasargode, this ancient fort is build on the shore of arabian sea. Bakel fort with its animated beach attracts lots of tourits. It was built to meet defense requirements.

The zig zag entrance, vivacious flight of steps, trenches, the tunnel that opens towards south and the sea waves that stroke the fort walls pleasantly all add to the beauty of the fort

Kappil beach
Six kms away from Bakel fort is Kappil beech.

This earthy ,harmonious beach in Kasargode is an excellent get away for gentle souls

Chandragiri fort
Built in 17th century,this fort is located at the south eastern outskirt of Kasargode.

River Payaswini, an enchanting river flows on one side of the fort. The shasta temple and mosque near the fort are worth visiting.

Kanjangad

At Kanjangad you can visit Hosdurg fort built by Somashekhara Nayaka. Karppureshwaram,located near this attracts multitude of pilgrims. Another place to visit is the Nityananda ashram.

Ananthapuram

One and only lake temple in Kerala, Ananthapuram temple, is 12km towards east from Kanjangad. Origin of Ananthapadmanabha,the famous idol of Thiruvananthapuram Ananthapadmanabha temple is this temple. This place is ideal for pilgrimage in Kasargode.

Pandyan rock

Ideal for adventurous swimming, Pandyan rock rises from sea at a distance of about 2km away from shore.

Veeramala hills
Situated at Cheruvatur,a southern Kasargode city, the hill top is adorned by the ruins of an 18th century dutch fort. Tourists love to view the elated beauty of Kariangode river from the hill top.

Kottancherry

Chilly and exotic rain forests of Kottancherry in Kasargode district attracts tourists who love to trek. It is about 30km south of Kanjangad. Kottacherry wildlife sanctuary can also be visited

Ranipuram/Madathumala

Located at 780m above the sea level this place has a climate similar to Ootty. It is about 85km away from Kasargode town. Wild elephants roaming through the valley is a common site in this sanctuary. Rare birds and butterflies are also seen
